It depends on how you look at it. The Yankees currently have A-Rod and Jeter signed to 10 year deals and Texiera and Sabathia with 8 and 7 year deals respectively. A 10 year contract for Mauer isn't unheard of. It's a big risk for a smaller club to take and so I think it's a bit extreme for the Twins but keeping your star around for a long time is a good way to maintain your fan base and help create some product identity. Still, does the 26 year old have 10 good years left in him? Will that knee hold up that long? I'd feel better with a 7 or 8 year deal, but it might take a 10 to get him to sign.
It might take 10 to get him to sign (and $200 million) but how long will he remain a catcher? Will his bat play at 0.325/20/100 as a DH or first baseman for $20 million a year? Is this more of a problem for Minnesota than either the Arod/Jeter/Tex/CC deals would be for them? It's hard to find 0.325 hitters, but it's not that hard to find 0.280/20/90 ballplayers for much less than $20 million. Or is it?
